Hornby Island

Hornby Island

August 2021 (Canceled)

Level of Diving

Diving will be in cold water off of a boat, with optional shore dives in between. Minimum 7mm wetsuit or drysuit is required. This trip is for divers with recent cold water diving experience who hold an SDI Advanced Diver rating (or equivalent). All dives are unguided so divers must not only have cold water diving experience, but must be proficient in navigation and buddy diving.

Jacques Cousteau famously proclaimed the emerald waters of British Columbia as “the best temperate water diving in the world and second only to the Red Sea”. British Columbia is chosen as one of the top diving destinations in North America year after year. The diversity of life, the health of the marine environment, and the breath-taking topside attractions make it a popular destination for scuba divers.

Hornby Island is located a couple hours north of Nanaimo or about an hour south of Comox, including requried ferry rides. You can expect to see wolf eels, Pacific red octopus, jellyfish, as well as a plethora of rock fish, sea stars, sea cucumbers, crabs, colorful anemones, lingcod, sculpin, and many more. If you`re lucky, you may even get buzzed underwater by a curious seal or sealion. Watch for the elusive six-gill shark that is not a danger to humans, but is a shy creature of the deep that sometimes frequents the shallow waters.

On the surface, keep your eyes out for orcas, seals, sealions, porpoises, and other small mammals that make these water their home.

Hornby Island

The island is renowned for its scenic rural vistas, beautiful beaches, plentiful wildlife, and mile pleasant climate. Island residents are known for their relaxed, friendly and artistic nature. The island is quaint but does have a grocery store, gas station, liquor depot, medical clinic, restaurants, and some shopping. Other activities for non-divers or during your surface interval include mountain biking, kayaking, swimming, hiking, exploring, shopping, and more.

The Lodge

Hornby Island Diving is located on two acres of property at picturesque Ford Cove. The dive boat is moored just steps from the lodge. Dive sites are located within 15 minutes of the harbour.

Hornby Island Diving is a family business that has been owner-operated for over 30 years. The guest lodge is simple but comfortable. Rooms contain either two single beds or one double bed. Washroom facilities are shared (two showers, four toilets). Delicious, homemade, healthy meals are included with your stay and are consistently a highlight of many guests’ experience. Common lounge area with TV, VCR, DVD, slide projection equipment.

For divers, there are heated gear drying rooms, gear rinse and storage station, camera station with outlets for charging, and a library with dive books and videos.
