Discover Snorkeling

The discover snorkeling course is a great way to learn how to use your snorkel gear in a safe and controlled environment, before heading out to the ocean. 

Course Prerequisites

  • Comfortable in water approximately chest level deep
  • Children ages 12 and under must have a parent register and participate in the course

Topics Discussed

  • Aquatic Environment: vision, light, sound, heat loss, tides, currents, waves, surge, marine life
  • Physics and Physiology: buoyancy, pressure and equalization
  • Snorkeling Equipment: mask, snorkel, fins, exposure suits, snorkeling vests (optional), weight belts (optional)
  • Accessories: dive flag, rescue signal, cutting device
  • Planning: diver fitness and readiness, buddy system, first aid

Water Skills

  • Properly prepare, don, and adjust all snorkeling equipment
  • Perform a buddy check, and demonstrate good use of the buddy system
  • Safely conduct exits and entries either from land, or boat
  • Achieve neutral buoyancy
  • Proper breathing and clearing of a snorkel
  • Proper use of buoyancy compensator device/snorkel vest
  • Surface dives
  • Proper use of hand signals

Important Details

  • Lessons will be held at the NAIT pool (unless indicated otherwise)
  • Lesson is approximately 1 hour in length, normally held in the evening during the week or during the day on the weekend
  • Pre-registration is required at least 24 hours prior to the start of the course
  • Rental mask, snorkel, and fins will be provided however students are encouraged to bring their own gear if they have their own
  • Discover Snorkeling Liability & Medical form must be filled out completely and signed
