The discover snorkeling course is a great way to learn how to use your snorkel gear in the safe and controlled environment of a pool, before heading out to the ocean. Designed for all levels of snorkelers, this course is a 1-hour session in the swimming pool with an instructor. You will learn how to properly fit and wear your mask, snorkel, and fins. As well as efficient kicking techniques, pike diving, and other skills that will make your ocean snorkeling experience more enjoyable. This is a great way to learn how to use all the gear before heading out to the ocean.

Course Prerequisites

  • Comfortable in water approximately chest level deep
  • Children ages 12 and under must have a parent register and participate in the course

Topics Discussed

  • Aquatic Environment: vision, light, sound, heat loss, tides, currents, waves, surge, marine life
  • Physics and Physiology: buoyancy, pressure and equalization
  • Snorkeling Equipment: mask, snorkel, fins, exposure suits, snorkeling vests (optional), weight belts (optional)
  • Accessories: dive flag, rescue signal, cutting device
  • Planning: diver fitness and readiness, buddy system, first aid

Water Skills

  • Properly prepare, don, and adjust all snorkeling equipment
  • Perform a buddy check, and demonstrate good use of the buddy system
  • Safely conduct exits and entries either from land, or boat
  • Achieve neutral buoyancy
  • Proper breathing and clearing of a snorkel
  • Proper use of buoyancy compensator device/snorkel vest
  • Surface dives
  • Proper use of hand signals.

Optional Online Training

If you would like more information about snorkeling, SDI offers an optional online training course for a small fee that takes about 1 hour to complete and will provide you with more knowledge to enhance your snorkeling experience. The course takes about 1 hour to complete, and can be accessed from your computer or tablet at home, the office, or even on vacation. It is a great reference tool before and after your pool snorkeling course or before you head out on your next snorkeling adventure. Topics covered include:

  • Snorkeling gear including mask, snorkel, fins, vest, exposure suits, weight, and accessories
  • Marine environment including marine life and water conditions
  • Physiology, breathing, free-diving, equalizing, physical exertion
  • Snorkeling with a buddy 

Important Details

  • Lessons will be held at the NAIT pool (unless indicated otherwise)
  • Lesson is approximately 1 hour in length, normally held in the evening during the week or during the day on the weekend
  • Rental mask, snorkel, and fins will be provided however students are encouraged to bring their own gear if they have their own
  • Please refer to our Refund Policy for questions about rescheduling or canceling registration for a course

Registration:

  • Pre-registration is required at least 24 hours prior to the start of the course
  • Discover Snorkeling Liability & Medical form must be filled out completely and signed
  • Please register with us online, in-store, or over the phone
  • For all ages. An adult must register and participate with children under 12 years old.
